Question
How do I create a new WebCT/Blackboard shell for my unit?
Answer
Some faculties have a policy that ALL units must have a WebCT/Blackboard presence. It is the unit coordinator's responsibility to create the 'section' (i.e. unit).
Unit coordinators or their delegates should create all WebCT/Blackboard shells using the Unit Request Form at http://staffuportal.vu.edu.au
For most of you, this will involve basing the WebCT/Blackboard shell on a previous semester's shell and copying over all content.
For those that need to create a new shell NOT based on a previous semester's shell, you may need to attach your faculty’s template. This is an option in the unit request form process.
Know your unit's code and correct name before starting to create your unit.
Step 1:
Go to the Staff Portal at http://staffuportal.vu.edu.au
You can read or print the comprehensive instructions on the login page if required, then click on the “Login” button and log in using your LDAP login (i.e. your current WebCT/Blackboard login)
Step 2:
Go to the “BB Section” tab to see the unit creation form.
Step 3:
Fill in the form to create your WebCT/Blackboard section. Note that the Unit Request form has recently been updated. One new feature long sought by staff is an option to allow students who withdraw from a unit to be automatically removed from your WebCT/Blackboard shell. The default option on the form has this feature 'on'.
Step 4:
Once the system notifies you that the section was created successfully you can log out of the Staff Portal.
Step 5:
To check your section has been created, log into WebCT/Blackboard . If you were logged in before creating your shell, log out and back in again.
Once the section has been created, the students enrolled in your unit will be uploaded into the Gradebook overnight.
If you have problems during the creation process you can log a job request at the ITS Service Desk on Extension 2777
