Question

 How can I add a student's name to WebCT/Blackboard manually for my unit?

 

 

Answer

Once students are on VUSIS it can take 24-48 hours for them to appear in the appropriate WebCT/Blackboard unit.

 

The transfer from VUSIS to the WebCT/Blackboard unit database process happens automatically at 6am each morning, as does the transfer to your unit.

 

If this has not yet happened, you can add one student or multiple students manually:

 

1. Select the 'Teach' tab.

 

2. Select 'Gradebook' from the left menu (bottom half).

 

3. At the top of the Gradebook window are some rectangular buttons. Select "Enrol Members"

 

4. Enter a student's ID ("s" + their VU ID : e.g. s123456

 

5. Select "Student" from the 'role' boxes to the right. Do not grant students 'Designer', 'Instructor', 'Teaching Assistant' or 'Auditor' roles unless you want them to be able to alter content and/or view and change all assessments, assignments and results (!)

 

6. Click on the 'Enrol' button. The student's details will appear in a table below the entry fields.

 

7. Enter the next student's ID and repeat steps 5 and 6.

 

8. IMPORTANT: When you have added all students, you must click on the 'SAVE' button at the bottom of the window. It is easy to overlook this step if you have added more than 5 or so students, because the 'Save' button is often below the visible window area and you need to scroll down.

 

Any attempt to add students who are not on VUSIS or the WebCT/Blackboard database will cause an error message to be displayed. Try the Check User utility on those students to discover their status and automatically add them to the WebCT/Blackboard database if they exist on VUSIS.
