Folder 3, Topic 5: I do not know what the italicised marks in brackets mean in the Gradebook

Question

What do the italicised mark values in brackets mean in the Gradebook?

Answer

Italicized numbers only appear in a 'calculated' column - e.g. a final, or midterm mark - or any column that you have created to add up, average, or otherwise process marks in other columns.

Any unfinished/unsubmitted quizzes or assignments that contribute to that calculated column cause an italicized running total to appear. When the student has completed everything, the total appears in  the 'normal' font.

The italics are therefore WebCT's shorthand for unfinished business ...

Here's the WebCT Help file entry related to this:

"In Gradebook , if at least one column referenced in the formula for the calculated column has a value, a running total displays. For example: If you create a formula that calculates the sum of the Midterm and Final, and there is a value in the Midterm column but not the Final column, the Midterm value will appear as a running total.

Running totals are italicized and appear in parenthesis. After there is a value in the Final column, the formula is completed and appears in plain text like other Gradebook  entries."
