Folder 5, Topic 2: Uploading materials to WebCT using WebDAV

Question

How can I upload multiple files and folders to WebCT using WebDAV?

Answer

Uploading materials to WebCT/Blackboard using WebDAV (Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning) is fast and powerful. WebDAV allows you to directly access the actual WebCT folder(s) where the files are stored for your unit. The folder sits right there on your desktop, so you can simply drag files and folders from your local machine straight onto the live WebCT folder.

You can drag a folder with any number of other folders in it, and every folder can contain any number of files. As soon as you drag and drop, everything ends up in WebCT in seconds. Of course, with this much power comes some risk. You are effectively working live on the WebCT server. Make a mistake, accidentally overwrite or erase 500 critical files - and they are gone. No undo. When using WebDAV, good file management and backup practices are critical.

OK, here's how to do it:

  • Open your unit and select the BUILD tab.

  • Select 'File Manager' under the Designer Tools subheading in the left menu.
  • At the top of the page is the heading 'File Manager' with an Action Menu button at right.

  • Click on the Action Menu button and select 'Open as Web Folder' from the dropdown menu. (Your intuition might tell you to select the View WebDAV Info link. DON'T !)

  • The folder that now opens is the WebCT/Blackboard folder containing all your unit's files. It's live. Anything you put in it, delete, rename or destroy occurs in real time and can not be undone.

  • Open the folder on your local machine where the files you want to transfer to WebCT are located. Resize and drag both windows so they sit conveniently next to each other ready for the next step.

  • Now simply drag content from your local folder and drop it on the newly opened WEBDAV folder and the job is done. Good practice dictates that you know exactly which subfolders you are in for both folders.

  •

It is important to understand that the WebDAV transfer process just copies files which are located on your computer into your WebCT unit's File Manager environment. Those files will not automatically appear on the home page, or anywhere else in WebCT. You, as Designer, need to create links on those pages where you want students to be able to access materials.
