Folder 5, Topic 5: Creating links on an HTML page which can open files in File Manager

Question

I'm building an HTML page (which will be uploaded to the File Manager). How do I add  links to other files which are already in the File Manager?

Answer

WebCT has its own internal file management structure, so the file path from your HTML page to any file in File Manager (the 'destination' file) must follow WebCT's file path rules.

The simplest method to create a valid link is as follows:

  • Make sure the files that you intend to reference with your HTML links are already in the appropriate subfolders in the File Manager.

  • Open the File Manager and navigate to the 'destination' file.

  • From the Action Menu button to the right of the file name, select 'View File HREF'

  • The correct file path to that file is shown in a new window. Copy the details.
  • Paste the link details into the HTML document you are creating.

When the newly created HTML page is uploaded to WebCT, the links to the internal 'destination' files will work correctly.
